Join us at 1 PM EDT Saturday 10/11 as the Jelly Rollers Dixieland Band performs live from the Barker Family Log Cabin porch again!! Bring your own lawn chairs and sit in the shade of our trees, or in the sun, to enjoy tunes!
We had such a wonderful time when they played in previous years, we had to have them back!
This happens the same day as the Boy Scouts Smokehouse project dedication, so we expect a big crowd, come early! See the other event the same day!
The Jelly Rollers, named in honor of Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton (1890-1941) of New Orleans, is a local Dixieland Band with instrumentation of clarinet, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and piano. It is based out of Westfield, and began after clarinetist John Boyer purchased a Dixieland anthology of arrangements of period works by composers including “Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, and Joseph “King” Oliver, with classic tunes like “When the Saints Go Marching In.” Our repertoire has since been significantly enlarged by arrangements customized for us by Tipton composer Charles Rose.
The original members, most of whom were active with the Zionsville Concert Band, were John Boyer, Bob Whitehead, David Hinshaw, Steve Turner, and Brent Prior, later adding pianist Tom Roberts. Current members live at Sheridan, Zionsville, Westfield, Tipton, Peru, and Kokomo. Recent performance opportunities include county fairs, church dinners, private holiday & special occasion events, and retirement homes in Westfield and Muncie. When weather is favorable, the porch of the historic Barker log cabin affords a perfect venue!
Our roster for the Westfield-Washington Historical Society event is:
John Boyer, clarinet
Mike McLaughlin, tenor sax
David Hinshaw, trumpet
Steve Turner, trombone
Steve Inman, tuba
Tom Roberts, piano (Both Tom and John Boyer's wife, Susan, are WWHS Board members.)
This is a free event, but of course we always encourage supporting the local Indiana musicians and any donations to the Historical Society are always welcome too! Bring your own lawn chairs. If the weather is inclement we will instead have the performance inside the City Hall Assembly room right next door at 130 Penn Street!
