Unified Urban Drainage (UUD) from Evzin & Associates, is a flood mitigation strategy conceived to reduce the impact of surface water drainage discharge. Water is a scarce resource, and there an ethical, moral and environmental requirement to integrate drainage and surface water management plans that avoid the issue of dispersed pollution.
The increase of urbanisation has intensified incidents of flash flooding, after sudden heavy falls of rain. As areas of natural vegetation are replaced by impermeable concrete, tarmac and buildings, the area loses its ability to absorb rainwater. The rain is instead directed into the surface water drainage systems, overloading them, causing floods and damage to residential and commercial properties and other infrastructure.
Surface Water Flooding is responsible for many catastrophes of both private housing and business premises. It becomes a danger for the environment when run-off water that has contaminates like oil, organic matter and toxic metals enters and pollutes the water bodies.
The concept of UUD is to replicate natural systems that employ effective devices with low environmental impact to drain away dirty and surface water run-off through collection, storage, and cleaning before allowing it to be released slowly back into the environment, such as a water course.
This counters the effects of conventional drainage systems that allow for flooding, pollution of the environment and contamination of groundwater sources that provides drinking water.
UUD from Evzin & Associates easy to manage, requiring little or no energy input, aesthetically attractive, environmentally sustainable and operationally resilient. Examples of this type of system are reed beds and other wetland habitats that collect, store, and filter dirty water along with providing a habitat for wildlife.
UUD from WST uses the following base line techniques:
- Source control.
- Permeable devices such as pervious concrete.
- Storm water retention.
- Storm water infiltration.
- Ecosystem management.
- Soft engineering.
- Underground floodway.
