Flood Risk Management Analysis

An introduction to Flood Risk Management Analysis

The UK has adopted a long-term and sustainable approach to manage the risk of flooding. For example with Scotland's approach to managing flood risk has changed with the enactment of the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009.

Land use planning measures will therefore form an important part of Flood Risk Management Strategies and Local Flood Risk Management Plans. Managing flood risk sustainability requires a long term approach to be taken. The catchment approach developed by SEPA/EA ensures that flooding is tackled.

This approach aims to reduce the adverse consequences of flooding on communities, the environment, cultural heritage and damage to the economy.

The SEPA illustration below shows managing floods sustainably means considering all sources of flooding and what actions can be taken to reduce the impact of flooding on communities.

To better plan and co-ordinate actions, there are vast improvements in the understanding of the sources and impacts of flooding.

By introducing more collaborative way of managing flood risks; with the preparation of Flood Risk Management Strategies and Local Flood Risk Management Plans. The planning system provides the most powerful tools available for managing flood risk.

The above diagram shows the benefits of taking a catchment approach to managing flood risk.
