Christian High School Book Club

The CHS Book Club offers students at all grade levels the opportunity to read some of the best, mostly Canadian, and mostly recent young adult fiction titles and to discuss these books with other students at Woodland.  With the students from several other Christian high schools, we form the Christian High School Book Club, and read from the same list of 10 books.  Students at Woodland commit to reading at least 5 of the nominated books and taking a short quiz on each book read.  To earn a Book Club activity bar, students must additionally attend at least 5 discussion meetings and go to The Final Word (a joint year-end meeting of all of the book clubs, a day-long event which always features a guest author). In late winter, Book Club members vote for their favourite title & the winning novel will earn this year's CHSBC award.  In pre-COVID times the high schools gathered for The Final Word to talk about books and hear from an author of one of the titles.  It is our hope that this will be possible in the future.

Goals of the Book Club:

1. to promote reading for enjoyment among high school students

2. to make students aware of quality Canadian young adult books

3. to expose teenagers to various written genres

4. to provide opportunities for students to discuss the nominated titles

5. to evaluate the worldview in the story

Discussion meetings are held in the library during Junior and Senior lunch.  The Woodland Library owns two  copies of each book, which may be signed out by book club members for just two weeks at a time (in order to allow other book club members to enjoy them).  Most of these titles are also available on the school KOBO, or can be borrowed at your local public library.

A list of books and the meeting schedule are all available from this site (see above).
