Digital Design

Course Description:

Digital Design: is the branch of graphic design that uses computers, graphics tablets and other electronic devices to create graphics and designs for web, television, print and portable electronic devices.


In this digital art course, students will explore and experiment with a broad sampling of digital programs, philosophies, and approaches in 2 dimensional art in order to gain an understanding of digital art and its place in the world. Student will learn about and generate art that communicates effectively to an intended audience, focusing on design elements and methods of presentation.

In each project, students will apply the elements and principles of art, art criticism and reflection, and make connections to history and contemporary culture. Emphasis will be placed on generating original ideas and creative expression. Students will be required to keep a sketchbook/journal in which they build, research and refine ideas, and practice skills, as well as an online portfolio in the form of a personal website. Throughout the course students will collect and organize materials, sketches, rough drafts, final projects, and self-assessments/written reflections into their website.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

    • Understand, identify and apply the elements and principles of design to assigned topics in select media areas.
    • Demonstrate basic application of skills in a variety digital programs.
    • Understand and engage in the process of creative problem solving, developing multiple ideas and solutions for any given assignment.
    • Create visual artworks, which communicate ideas, feeling or meaning, and be able to critique this work using arts knowledge and vocabulary.
    • Identify and reflect on the influence of digital artforms in present day society including digital citizenship.
