Drawing I
Course Description:
In this foundational course, students will explore and experiment with a broad sampling of media, techniques, and approaches in Drawing. Students will engage in a variety of drawing experiences such as drawing from observation, perspective, and imagination.
In each area, students will apply the elements and principles of art, art criticism and reflection, and make connections to history and contemporary culture. Emphasis will be placed on generating original ideas and creative expression. Students will be required to keep a sketchbook/journal in which they build, research and refine ideas, and practice skills. Throughout the course students will collect and organize materials in a portfolio including handouts, sketches and rough drafts, final projects, or digital images of these products, visuals and resources, homework, and self-assessments/written reflections.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:
Apply observational skills and visual measuring to drawings from observation.
Use 1 and 2 pt. perspective to reader a sense of 3-dimensional space and form.
Understand how light and shading can suggest an illusion of form, space and mood, and apply these concepts to drawings.
Understand the roll composition plays in drawing, and apply basic design skills to setting up or arranging the composition of drawings.
Demonstrate basic skills in a variety of 2-D media.
Understand and engage in a process of creative problem solving, developing multiple ideas and solutions for any given assignment.
Create visual artworks, which communicate ideas, feeling or meaning, and be able to critique this work using arts knowledge and vocabulary.
Trace historical origins of various art forms while identifying how these art forms are used in present day society.
