Course Description:

In this course students will create a portfolio of work for submission to the AP board for potential college credit. Students have the option to create a portfolio in accordance to the requirements of 2D Design, 3D Design, or Drawing. There are no required or dictated method of approaching the portfolio categories. It is important that students learn to express themselves in their own personal style. Students learn that art making is an ongoing process in which they create, review, make modifications, and explore variations as they make critical decisions and develop their art forms. Homework assignments, journals, and work outside of the school day (5+ hours a week) will take place throughout the year. Ongoing group critiques with peers and the teacher, as well as ongoing individual conferences with the teacher, will take place throughout the course and form part of the assessment for the course. Other assessments will be formative and summative as requirements are completed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Encourage creative and systematic investigation of formal and conceptual issues.
Investigate how past current artists have approached design issues and solved artistic problems.
Emphasize making art as an ongoing process that involves the student in informed and critical decision making.
Help students develop technical skills and familiarize them with the functions of visual elements in 3D form.
Encourage students to become independent thinkers who will contribute inventively and critically to their culture through the making of art.
Understand, especially in this increasingly technological field, what constitutes plagiarism, while developing artistic integrity.
