The following is a summary of how grades are earned in PE at WLIS. Students earn one of the following three grades. A detailed explanation of each of the three grading categories can be found below.
E – Exceeds expectations
S - Satisfactory
N - Needs improvement
Grades earned in PE at WLIS are based on more than participation. Grades are earned through effort, listening skills, attitude, and growth/mastery according to grade level. A student does not have to be “good at PE” or “athletic” to do well in PE. A student needs to be able to listen, understand, and give consistent effort. The majority of our students earn S (Satisfactory) grades.
Students have two 45-minute PE classes each week, so we only see them a maximum of 36 times each semester. Each class period is very important. Grades are updated in Skyward throughout the semester. Students receiving an N (Needs improvement) will have a comment(s) in the notes section of Skyward, briefly explaining where improvement is needed.
We use a holistic rubric to determine students’ grades. A holistic rubric provides a single score for the student’s entire body of work, based on an overall impression.
Below is a detailed explanation of what each grading category looks like.
