Laptop Minimum & Recommended Specifications

Laptop Minimum & Recommended Specifications for Students

These specifications should be used as guidance when making decisions on purchasing a laptop for use at WIS.

MINIMUM specifications are for those who are choosing not to buy a new laptop and want to bring an existing one to WIS.

RECOMMENDED specifications are for those who are choosing to purchase a new laptop and need guidance on which specifications to go with.

A note on Netbooks and Chromebooks: are becoming more popular with their low prices. If considering buying a netbook, it is advised to stay with Intel Atom processors and Windows 10. Also consider maximising the amount of RAM and hard drive space. Netbooks are truly only suitable for basic internet browsing and word processing and are not recommended for students whose needs are above these basic functions. Netbooks are NOT viable solutions for audio/video/web production & design, database work, and math/engineering applications. Chromebooks are more suited for online applications such as google docs, sheets, drive, etc.

Note: If deciding on purchasing a Macbook after Year 9, please contact your course advisor first. Film & Multimedia, Digital Art, Business, Engineering, Mathematics & Science classes may require the use of Windows-only software. If you need Windows-only software it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to purchase a Windows laptop. Please contact the IT Service Desk at helpdesk@wis.edu.hk before purchasing a Macbook if Windows is a requirement.
