WCS seeks to follow the laws and regulations set forth by the State of Delaware and Department of Education with regards to medication administration and/or assistance. We follow these regulations for the safety of all students at the school.
All prescription medications that are brought in from home must be in a pharmacy container with a current pharmacy label accompanied by consent from the parent authorizing administration times and amounts. Over the counter medications must be in the original bottle/container and labeled with the student's name and accompanied by parental consent.
Prescription and over the counter medications can be given during the school day by the school nurse. Students may not carry prescription or over the counter medications with them at school. Teachers may not dispense prescription or over the counter medications.
Complete the attached form, follow the instructions on the form, and return it to the school nurse if your child needs medication during the school day.
Prescription medication can be authorized by a parent/guardian by using the permission form below (School Day Medication Consent). Prescription medication must be in a pharmacy container or bottle with current prescription label attached. Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be authorized using the Over the Counter Medication Consent form attached below.
Medication assistance by a trained staff member may occur during school sponsored events that are not during regular school hours and/or are off school premises (such as field trips and sports practices/games).
Over the counter medications require a prescription or written directive from the doctor when used for a field trip and/or other school activity outside the normal school day.
All medications must first be given to the school nurse:
In an original prescription bottle with current prescription label attached. Some pharmacies will provide an additional prescription bottle with prescription label for this purpose.
Please provide only the doses needed for field trip or event
Complete the field trip permission form including medication information or complete the consent form attached below
Wilmington Christian School policy and State of Delaware Department of Education regulations permit middle and high school students to carry and self-administer medication only for the treatment of life threatening illness such as asthma, anaphylaxis, and diabetes. Written parental authorization must be on file with the school nurse in order for a student to carry and self-administer medication in these circumstances. Students must also demonstrate proficiency of use to the school nurse.
WCS Self-Administration Authorization and student proficiency of use demonstration must be renewed annually.
Use of an emergency medication at school requires notifying the school nurse.
