Wilmington Christian School Food Allergy and Peanut Reduced Risk Policy

To promote a safe environment for all students, staff, and members of the Wilmington Christian School community this school shall be considered a "Peanut Aware School" and has adopted the following Peanut and Nut Reduced Risk Policy.

  • All students with a life-threatening allergy to peanuts, nuts, or other foods will be identified by parents to the school nurse annually during admission/re-enrollment. This can be done on the student's physical form or the Student Emergency Information Card.

    • Each student with a life-threatening allergy to peanuts, nuts, or other foods will have an individualized emergency plan and prescribed emergency medication shall be in a location accessible to staff.

      • The Food Allergy Action Plan developed by FARE can be used as an emergency care plan for food allergies. This care plan should be filled out and signed by a parent and a primary care provider and updated annually in September.

      • If the student's physician has prescribed an Epinephrine Auto-Injector (e.g. Epipen) for the allergy, the parent is required to provide a pharmacy labeled, unexpired Epinephrine Auto-Injector to the school nurse. It is preferred that the "twin-pack" containing two Epinephrine Auto-Injectors be provided as this allows the recommended back-up injection.

      • Middle school and high school students who demonstrate annual proficiency of use of their emergency medication to the school nurse will be allowed to carry it with them during the school day. The WCS Self-Administration Authorization form (attached below) must be completed, signed by a parent and on file in the nurse's office.

    • WCS will plan and implement strategies designed to promote individual avoidance of the known allergens.
