Asthma

At WCS, it is our goal to minimize the number of days a child loses due to illness. Children who have asthma are at increased risk for illness and days of school lost. In order for us to help children with asthma stay in school, the following guidelines have been adopted.

    • Asthma Action Plan Develop an Asthma Action Plan with the help of your child's doctor. This form will include information such as asthma medications, asthma triggers, early symptoms of flare-up, and what to do if your child has a flare-up. Please provide an updated copy of this plan to the school nurse each year when school starts.

    • Rescue Medication Asthma attacks can occur unexpectedly and at any time. It is important that rescue medication for asthma be available during the school day for children who have asthma. Elementary students should have their unexpired rescue inhalers with prescription label (or a copy of it) available in the nurse's office for use when needed. Middle school and high school students may keep their rescue inhalers with them if they have done the following:

      • presented the completed WCS Self-Administration Authorization form (attached below) to the school nurse (NEEDS TO BE RENEWED ANNUALLY)

      • demonstrated to the school nurse correct use of medication and verbalized understanding of when to use

      • understood that use of the medication during the school day requires a visit to the school nurse for follow-up
