MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports. The MTSS process at West Holt started out as RtI. It was transformed into the MTSS process through collaboration with the UNL Consortium of NeMTSS. The MTSS team was trained through ESU1 in Wakefield with Loretta Tabor and Lynette Block to work through the MTSS plan. The West Holt MTSS plan includes decision rules on placing struggling readers in Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and layering additional reading skill work. The MTSS team created the following timeline for implementation of the process:
Year 1- Grades K-3
Year 2- Grade 4
Year 3- Grades 5-6
West Holt is currently in year 4 of implementation.
West Holt's reading coach, Kathy Randolph, trained teachers in explicit instruction, unison response with templates, and error correction. Our elementary teachers were also trained in Anita Archer to aid in vocabulary instruction. Reading interventionists were trained in EIR and Corrective Reading. To ensure implementation of the MTSS plan, the reading coach and elementary principal conducted monthly fidelity checks to monitor unison response, error correction, and explicit instruction. Due to the teacher's success in the implementation of these methods, fidelity checks have now decreased to once or twice a quarter.
The MTSS team meets monthly to discuss student data. The Title teacher and reading coach also meet with classroom teachers one day a month to discuss student data from progress monitoring, adjust aim lines, and goals for success. Tracking this progress ensures that interventions are successful, and students begin to close the gap.
