What is it?
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI/SST process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. Progress is closely monitored to assess both the learning rate and level of performance of individual students. Educational decisions about the intensity and duration of interventions are based on individual student's response to instruction. It is important to note that RTI/SST is not the road to Special Education but rather the road to improved instructional practices that meet the needs of the learner.
How Does it Work?
Tier 1:
This is the first line of defense and is all about what best practices are taking place in the classroom to ensure the instruction and environment meet the needs of each learner. These are things like guided reading and math groups and a strong PBIS (Positive Behavior and Intervention Support) system. Below is a graphic outlining what a quality Tier 1 instructional cycle should look like. You can click on the content tabs (Behavior, Literacy, Math) found on the home page for more information about specific interventions for each Tier as well as efficient tracking tools to help you monitor the students growth.
Pictured below is the process for RTI/SST. This will hopefully clear up what stage of the process you may be in with your student and what to expect next.

Every road in education starts with a high-quality researched-based instructional cycle (pictured above). That should be coupled with valid and reliable assessment tools. With these two foundations in place, teachers will find that approximately 80% of their students will have a successful educational experience. The RTI/SST process helps us determine what we can do differently/better to meet the needs of the other 20%. This process begins with Tier 1 interventions. These are instructional accommodations that allow the student to better access the curriculum or be more successful in the environment. There are efficient intervention examples provided for you, under the Interventions button for each content area (pictured below) as well as tracking tools (also pictured below) to help you monitor the effectiveness of those interventions.
