Critical Friend and Professional Practice:
We will be open and honest, mature and truthful as per Code of Ethics. We are not finger pointing - we are information sharing.
We expect openness and honesty so we have clarity and consistency of understanding.
Code of Ethics:
The professional interactions of teachers are governed by four fundamental principles:
1. Autonomy to treat people with rights that are to be honoured and defended.
2. Justice to share power and prevent the abuse of power.
3. Responsible care to do good and minimise harm to others.
4. Truth to be honest with others and self.
Chinese Whispers and similar concerns expressed last year.
We can hope the whisperer’s change their habits because the only person you can change is yourself…
Strategy:
Principle 4 Truth to be honest with others and self.
We change the culture of Chinese Whispers by not listening.
To gossip seems to be a human characteristic - remember tho if someone will gossip to you then equally they will gossip about you.
Response: - I think you need to address that with the person concerned.
If you can’t on your own, you get help to do that…
Key Competency:
The Key Competency here is
Managing Self
Choose not to engage, not to listen, not to add fuel - redirect to the source…
There’s a reason why they are called KEY Competencies.
They apply to us as much as to our children.
They apply in all three areas:
Teaching Practice
Professional Practice
Leadership Practice
Pedagogy
Positive Behaviour Management
Curriculum Knowledge
Instructional Practice
Formative Assessing

The heart of what we are trying to achieve is
Actively involved = caring, contributing citizens
We achieve this through the vehicle of the TRUMPS
The TRUMPS are supported by the Curriculum areas, not the other way around.
Critical Friend Feedback:
As teachers, you would never consider it appropriate to be giving praise as the ONLY form of feedback to your children.
The same applies for me with you.
My role is to acknowledge all that is good and being done well.
It is also to be the Critical Friend and address that which can be improved.
As professionals, we should constantly be looking for ways we can be better than before.
We are moving the locus away from teacher to learner and from testing to teaching and learning.
Also to involving parents and communicating clearly, accurately, transparently, honestly, meaningfully.
Our new reports have evolved into their 12th iteration here. This model, covers everything the Ministry recommends except explicitly the “how parents can help” aspect. We will ensure we cover that when we address each child’s goal setting and action plan aspect. This format predated the Ministry model, so it is well grounded. It addresses everything the Ministry recommends/requires and that is has been modified by our Lead Team several times.
Professionalism of our Teaching Profession:
We should be incorporating Higher Order Thinking as a matter of course.
We should be focusing on the Key Competencies - these need to be at the heart of everything we teach and the change-growth we are seeking to achieve in each child.
We do need to ensure children own their learning, are regularly reflecting on what they are achieving, and therefore proud of.
Many have found the HOT Thinking reporting segment a challenge.
This has opened up an awareness of gaps we need to address.
This is an issue because HOT hasn’t been driven, from now it will be.
Look for the Teachable Moment - Hit the HOT Topic when it presents itself… for example at Whanau Time we had children sharing animal facts
“Panda’s in the wild live on average 20 years, but in captivity on average 30 years.”
This is a perfect opportunity to take Blooms 1 = remember facts - to a Higher Level, 3 = Analyse.
