Small Moment Stories
The first graders develop skills as writers across genres throughout the year. We begin with Small Moment Stories. These are personal narratives - true accounts of the events in our lives. Stories are told in the first person. Young writers think of these as "small moment" stories because we try to zoom in on one special moment in a larger story. For example, a writer might focus on one exciting ride at the amusement park rather than write a story that includes everything about the trip to the amusement parks. The best small moment stories often focus on the simple everyday events in our lives such as losing a tooth, learning to ride a bike, or meeting a new friend on the first day of school.
Our 1K Writers begin the year learning to:
Plan stories with pictures and labels.
Tell the events in order, using transition words such as "first", "next", "then", "after that", and "finally".
Create a strong beginning.
Bring stories to life with action and dialogue.
Wrap up the story at the end.
