Guided Reading is small-group, differentiated reading instruction designed to support children as they develop proficiency in reading. Each small group lesson is tailored to meet the instructional needs of each student. Teachers begin by assessing each student in order to create small flexible groups of students with similar instructional needs.
The text is selected to closely match each child's instructional reading level. The text must accessible to the child while still offering some challenge.
The teacher introduces the book and attends to vocabulary, text structure, and specific teaching points. Each child reads the entire text, gaining practice with reading strategies.
The students discuss the book as the teacher guides the discussion to expand students overall understanding of meaning, theme, and author's craft.
Opportunities for word work are included in the lesson.
The teacher reinforces the explicit teaching points related to the text.
