What is the best way that you can support your young reader's skills at home?
READ ! READ ! READ !
Read aloud to your child. Read with expression. Talk about the book. Make some predictions. You become a model of good reading practice...and it's a wonderful time to spend with your child at the end of a busy day!
Listen as your child reads to you. Later in September, he/she will bring home Guided Reading books that have been practiced during the week. Rereading these books to a grown-up at home is important homework and helps your child develop fluency in reading.
Encourage your child to practice using reading strategies if he/she is stuck on a word. Refer to our "Toolbox of Reading Strategies".
Visit the library. Encourage your child to find some interesting "Just Right Books" - not to easy but not to hard. Choose other, more challenging books, for you to read to your child.
Foster the love of reading and help your child to develop the habit of daily reading. Turn off the TV and take out some books!
READ! READ! READ!
HAVE FUN AND HAPPY READING!
