The Cathedral Choristers
The Chorister Program is a collaborative effort between Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral and Cathedral School, offering students in grades 2 through 8 a rich and formative experience in sacred music. Rooted in the esteemed curriculum of the Royal School of Church Music in America (RSCM)—an organization founded in England and shaped by the Anglican choral tradition—the program emphasizes musical excellence, spiritual depth, and liturgical service. At its heart are the RSCM motto, “I will sing with the spirit and with the understanding also,” and the cherished Chorister Prayer, which guide and inspire each rehearsal and performance.
The program provides a rigorous yet nurturing musical education, fostering vocal technique, music literacy, and a deep understanding of the Church’s musical heritage. Choristers are formed not only as skilled musicians but also as leaders in worship and stewards of the sacred liturgy.
Led by a dedicated team of professionals—Dr. David Danielson Eaton, Director of Music and Cathedral Organist at the Cathedral; Dr. Mi Zhou, Sacred Music Associate; and Mr. Willem Lutter, Music Teacher at Cathedral School—the Chorister Program cultivates excellence in both musical formation and spiritual life.
Rehearsals are held twice weekly, on Mondays and Thursdays from 2:50 to 3:40 PM at the historic Sacred Heart Church. Choristers sing regularly at Masses at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral and Cathedral School, participating at least once a month and enriching the liturgical life of both communities.
In addition to their regular liturgical responsibilities, Choristers also have the opportunity to participate in special events such as the revered Advent Lessons & Carols and the annual Cathedral Choir and Choristers Concert, presented as part of the Sacred Music Series at the Cathedral—highlighting their contribution to the wider cultural and spiritual life of the parish.
This program upholds the finest ideals of the Church’s musical tradition, offering young singers the opportunity to grow in faith, artistry, and community. To sign up, email Mr. Lutter. There is a $400 fee for the year to cover the costs of music and personell, prorated over the year and drafted through FACTS.
