LATIN I

Salvete discipulae et discipuli to the Latin program at Sanderson. Sum magister Herr Wachter.

Cur estudiamus Latinum? Cur estis in Latine?

The reason for each and every one of you for taking and studying Latin will be different. Is it the SAT's? A genuine interest in Latin? The Roman culture or the field of Logic? Whatever your reason - welcome.

Latin is a beautiful but difficult language. Different to English, in Latin a word and its various endings will tell you about the meaning and the function of the word. The language is very structured and beautiful to read in its simplicity. And that's what we mainly want to do: Reading, translating, some own writing. And on our journey we should understand some more about our own heritage, history, language, and grammar.

Thanks for taking this class and I wish for all of you this year to be a successful one!

Language Department Grading Policy

Grades will be updated frequently in PowerSchool. Interim reports will go home every 4-5 weeks.

Homework 10 %

Classwork 25%

Minor Assessments ( vocab Quizzes etc.) 30%

Grade recovery process

Grade Recovery Missing/Late Work -----Student is putting forth effort but is not succeeding

For test retakes or alternative assignments, students will receive the grade of the make up work if it is done on time and after discussing it with his/her teacher. Teachers do not have to accept recovery work after one week prior to the end of the grading period. ∙

Grade recovery - specifics to this class

In addition to the SHS recovery process, the Foreign Language department will allow you to retake any assessment on which you do not show mastery within a timeframe established by the teacher. You may only retake the assessment if all homework and classwork is completed. You must also complete any determined qualifier before reassessing. The qualifier might vary from assessment to assessment, depending on the problems the first assessment showed.

Syllabus:

We will read the story of the author and poet Horace (his childhood and education). He is an example of a Roman celebrity growing up in the time of Cesar. Through his story we will also learn about the Siege of Troy and its outcome for the Trojans (the story of Aeneas). We will read, understand the grammar, studying vocabulary and finally translate. this semester, we should cover up to 10 chapters of the book, that we will read online.
