Kapitel 11b

THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE   (most important part of German 2!)

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED ABOUT THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE?

The Present Perfect Tense consists of _2____ parts. Part one is the __helping_ verb. This verb takes the _verb_____ position of the  sentence. In questions it __starts__  the question or follows the question word, in statements it will be the __2nd_ information of the sentence. It is usually placed next to the _subject__. This helping verb is either _sein_ or _haben__. This __helping__ verb has to be conjugated and it appears in the __present__ tense.

The second part of the Present Perfect Tense is the action____ verb. It appears at the end__ of the sentence (or phrase). It is _not_ conjugated, meaning that it will stay the same no matter what subject. The action verb appears in a form that we have not learned before. This form is called the _Past_____ ___Participle_____. In the English language we also have these past participles. The past participle of the verb “to go” is _gone_____, the past participle of the verb “to see” is seen___. In English as well as in German these Past Participles need a helping verb to form a sentence_____. Examples for Past Participles in German are: aufgemacht, gefahren, gewesen (Past Participle of “sein”), __gesprochen___, and __gesagt___. Page 335 in the book gives us a list of Past Participles of regular verbs like “gekauft, gewandert, gereist, gelernt, gemeint, geschenkt…”, page 349 provides us with a list of irregular verbs in the Past Participle “gekommen, geholfen, gekannt, getragen, genommen, gelesen”.

All regular verb Past Participles end in the letter “t_”, while most irregular verb past Participles end in the letters __en__ (most, not all. Some exceptions:  gekannt, gewusst, gebracht, gehabt…).

As a rule of thumb note that regular verbs usually go with the helping verb “haben” (exception: wandern and reisen). For irregular verbs we have to study the helping verb for the Present Perfect Tense individually. Verbs of movement usually go with “sein” (grammar rule: intransitive verbs, verbs that can not carry/affect a direct object will use the helping verb “sein” to form the present perfect tense.)

Regular Verbs form the Past Participle by taking the _3rd_ Person singular of the present tense form and add the letter combination (prefix) __ge_ to it. If a regular verb has a separable prefix attached to it (machen – aufmachen), the separable prefix will still go at the _beginning___ of the verb, followed by the _ge___ and the 3rd Ps Sing Present Tense of the verb (auf – ge – macht). If the prefix is not separable (grűβen – begrűβen), the prefix will stay in place and no _ge_ will be added (er hat begrűβt).

That’s basically it. The next step for you is to study your verb forms!  https://quizlet.com/369578928/german-2-verb-log-flash-cards/   Use this log, copy it into your own account and add new verbs whenever they come across. 4th quarter: we will have a regular Friday Quiz on these verbs. I will add verbs to my own account as well!
