My paintings are most influenced by the Pop artist, Robert Rauschenberg. I've admired and studied his collage work, photo-transfer process, and "combines;" paintings with 3-D found objects attached. Some of my paintings are developed from demonstration pieces I've used for teaching in my classroom.
I've entitled this series of work; Rusted Relics. I decided to paint discarded, found objects. These items once had a function but no longer serve a purpose. They've been abandoned and are often viewed as trash. I am not so much interested in their prior context as I am in their formal properties: shape, color, & surface texture. I like to give them a new purpose or sense of importance by making them my sole subject. I also like that these works leave the meaning more ambiguous for viewers. These objects are not like a portrait or landscape paintings. The viewer can interpret them differently. Each oil painting is 9" X 12". By the time I reached the third painting I decided to also make this series a study in complimentary color.
