COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students develop their ability to draw what they see, improve their hand – mind connection, and engage in creative thinking. Students will learn practical drawing strategies that will improve their skills while using a variety of media. Coursework will focus on still life, nature, human form, and architectural structures. The history of drawing will be viewed from a variety of resource materials. Students will document ideas, process, problems, and solution in a sketchbook.
Upon completion of the Drawing 1 semester course you may take any of the other art courses.
Visual Journal Bootcamp Work: Basic Forms, Contour Hands, Cross-Contours, Sphere & Value Scale
Drawing Strategies: Being Observant. Sighting & Sizing. Restate vs. Erase. Drawing from Shoulder vs. Wrist. Seeing basic shapes. Largest Shapes First. Drawing what you cannot see. Using cross-contour lines. Establishing light source & identifying the parts of light. Using a cropping angle.

A pre-drawing of a challenging still life object is completed at the beginning of the course to establish a baseline of student drawing skill. The pre-drawing is a non-graded record of student skill.
The exam at the end of the course will consist of completing another post-drawing of the same object.
Pre and post drawings will be assessed for growth and improvement throughout the semester.

Use a variety of drawing mediums (graphite, ink, colored pencil, pastel, charcoal, scratchboard).

Practice work is non-graded work that prepares students for success on graded projects.
Practice work exercises allow students to experiment with learning new concepts, vocabulary, skills, & techniques.
Practice work allows students to make mistakes and learn from these mistakes without the fear of their grade being impacted.
Art is a skill. Much like with everything else; the more you practice, the better you get.
Practice work will build confidence, ability, and repetition to improve student performance.
