COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay. Students will make functional and sculptural works with both hand built and wheel throwing methods--all while applying the Elements or Art and Principles of Design. Students learn fundamental techniques with a focus on executing good design, forms, and craftsmanship. In addition, students will also learn about glazing and kiln firing. Students will document ideas, process, problems, and solution in a visual journal.

Problem:
The oldest form of creating a ceramic piece by finger manipulation is the pinch method. Therefore, it is imperative that Ceramic I students know how to build with their hands.

Collaborative Mosaic Murals
These clay relief tile mosaics were collaborative projects completed by Ceramics 1, 2, & 3 students. Each student carved a 8" X 8" square clay tile that when assembled formed the overall image. The size of the completed images with wooden frame: 4' X 4'
The mosaic (right) was completed by Ceramics 2 & 3 students during the fall semester of 2012. Tile mosaic (left) was completed by Ceramics 1 students during the spring semester of 2010.
These works hang in the 3-D classroom studio; room J138.
