COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students learn and apply the elements and principles of art through a variety of design projects (cut paper, collage, lettering, painting, printmaking, digital applications, etc.)  Emphasis will be on design rather than realistic drawing.  Students will learn about popular culture and art in our society as well as exploring commercial and graphic arts.  Students will document ideas, process, problems, and solution in a sketchbook.

Upon completion of the Art & Design semester course you may take any of the other art courses listed except Drawing 2.

PROBLEM:

Utilize text to create a visually appealing image that reflects Animal Planet theme.  

SOCIAL ISSUE GRAFFITI 

THEME:

How graffiti (street art) has been used to communicate social issue to community.

PROBLEM:

Use text & imagery to bring focus to a social issue.  

IMAGE TO LOGO

PROBLEM: 

Transform a representational subject into logos using a variety of different media.

3D PUZZLE DESIGN

PROBLEM:

Duplicate a small portion of a painting using colored pencil.  Cut & arrange pieces & utilize linear perspective to create 3D exploded puzzle.

KALEIDOSCOPE DESIGN

PROBLEM:

Design a triangle template.  Rotate & flip on a radial axis to generate the principle of repetition & pattern.  Paint with watercolor utilizing a unified color scheme.

PRODUCT AD

PROBLEM: 

Select a brand/company and analyze their logo.  Pick an existing product or product you'd like to see and create an ad design to promote it.

TESSELLATION

PROBLEM:

A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a place using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. In mathematics, tessellation can be generalized to higher dimensions and a variety of geometries.

 2D to 3D PAPER SCULPTURE

PROBLEM: 

View 2D works by Victor Vassarely.  Select a piece to interpret in 3D, relief or in-the-round, using paper, tape, & foamboard.

Completed works were exhibited at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in conjunction with an exhibition of works by Op artist Victor Vassarily exhibition.

CARDBOARD SHOE 

PRACTICE:

Form - Objects that are three-dimensional having length, width, and height. They can be views from many sides. Forms take up space and volume.
