About Me

I am a bilingual speaker of Spanish and English. I have been a student of languages through both immersion and classroom instruction and have become a dedicated and versatile teacher. I have studied Russian, Hebrew, Afrikaans, and Portuguese and I integrate my own language-learning experience into my teaching practice.

My mother moved from Puerto Rico when she was 17 and has absolute fluency between Spanish and English. As a child, she taught me songs, rhymes, stories, and prayers in Spanish, but I did not achieve fluency until I completed an immersion program in Guatemala when I was 18.

I have benefited from the experience of both classroom instruction and immersion and have become convinced that the efficacy of both methods is mutually dependent. Adult and adolescent students must have a strong foundation in the grammar and semantics of the language in order to be successful in an immersion context.

One of the most helpful skills that I can teach my students in metalinguistic awareness. Grammatical structures are universal and language-learning can be taught as an equation. As a result, students are prepared to learn other languages more efficiently.
