Information on Scholarships

There are two basic types of scholarships:

- Academic Scholarships

- Add-on Scholarships

Academic Scholarships

Academic scholarships are determined by your overall GPA and your ACT score.  To be competitive for academic scholarships you need to maintain an overall GPA of 3.75 and earn a cumulative ACT score of 23 or higher.  Obviously, the higher your GPA and ACT score, the better are your chances of earning a full-tuition scholarship.  (To "guarantee" yourself of an academic full-tuition scholarship, you need to earn a GPA of 3.80 and higher and score a minimum of 28 on the ACT)

To qualify for Academic scholarships, you must first apply to the colleges you want to attend.  After applying OR as part of the application process, you are then considered for academic scholarships at that school you are applying to.  I recommend that students apply to a minimum of three colleges you would be willing to attend.  Academic scholarships are institution based, meaning you must use the scholarship at the school that offered the scholarship.  You cannot take that scholarship to another school.

Add-On Scholarships

Add-On Scholarship are highly influenced by your overall GPA and ACT scores, but are usually offered with "minimum" academic requirements of 2.70 up to 3.25.  However, you must realize you are competing against students who may have much higher GPA's and ACT scores.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of add-on scholarships.  Almost every major business or company in the world offers scholarships through their companies.  The challenge is finding the scholarships you qualify for and then actually applying for the scholarships.

College and Scholarship Internet Search Engines

You should never have to pay money for scholarship searches or information!  You will have to create a log in id and password for each of the search engines you use to search for scholarships, but they are all free of charge.

An example of one of these Internet search engines is UtahFutures.  In addition to searching for colleges, majors, and scholarships, and you do self assessments and explore careers. You can access this site by clicking on this link: http://utahfutures.org/ .

Washington County School District also has a Guidance Link with scholarship information.  Click on the link below to access more scholarships online:

When should I start preparing for a scholarship for college? Working hard and doing as well as you can in school right now is where you should start.

There are literally tens of thousands of scholarships out there and you will be surprised how many scholarships are available for students without perfect grades (but the better the grades the better the deal!).  For example, a Dixie State Scholarship could pay for all your tuition and fees for 4 years (up to approx $21,000 for the Presidential Scholarship)!!  In order to qualify for this you must be close to a 4.0 student and have a great ACT score, but Dixie also has several other scholarships available for students who have not performed as well that are listed.
