VYKRUTAS UKRAINIAN DANCE SOCIETY NEWS RELEASE

OVER 100 DANCERS TO TAKE THE STAGE IN CALGARY FOR BRAVO! 2022, A BENEFIT PERFORMANCE FOR UKRAINE!

BRAVO! 2022 returns to Calgary for its second year after debuting in 2020. Vykrutas Ukrainian Dance Society is one of the city's four largest Ukrainian dance organizations that was founded to celebrate, preserve, and promote Ukrainian dance, culture, and history through the passionate and talented Artistic Director, Vasyl Kanevets. Like many of the dance groups, Vykrutas has kept strong and resilient through the pandemic by pushing forward with new choreography and engaging dancers in culture talks on Ukraine, its culture and history, all in anticipation of performing again. BRAVO! continues this year in the same vein it was started, as a joint collaborative event that delivers inspiring performances by junior ensemble dancers from Ukrainian and other folk-dance groups in Alberta and, hopefully in the future, the rest of Canada as well.

The plans for BRAVO! 2022 have been in the making for over two years and the recent devastation unfolding in Ukraine has driven a need to change those plans. This year, the Joint Collaboration Performance of dancers will rally around our homeland Ukraine where many of the dancers still have family and friends or roots linking back to their forefathers. The tragic events of February 24th and the full-scale attack on Ukraine, its people, their sovereignty, freedom, nationality, and culture is heart-wrenching and inhumane.

We therefore dedicate the BRAVO! 2022 performance to Ukraine and the strong, proud, and determined Ukrainian people who are defending their country and our homeland. While we may be over 8,000 km away, we are one and we are united in solidarity. Vykrutas Presents, BRAVO! UKRAINE, WE BELIEVE IN YOUR GLORY! СЛАВА УКРАЇНІ! Saturday, April 30, 2020 at 7:00 pm. The Vykrutas Board of Directors has deemed BRAVO! 2022 to be a benefit performance event for Ukraine with all net proceeds from ticket sales going to humanitarian aid, including charities that support the needs of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people.

This year’s cast for BRAVO! is again uniting the Calgary and Edmonton dance communities. More than 100 passionate dancers will take the stage from 7 dance groups of Ukrainian and Polish descent - Cheremshyna Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and Chumak II (Edmonton, AB), Studia Shumka (Edmonton, AB), Vykrutas Ukrainian Dance Ensemble (Calgary, AB), Polanie Polish Folk Dance Ensemble (Calgary, AB), Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers (Calgary, AB), Barvinok Ukrainian Dancers (Calgary, AB) and Junior Tryzub (Calgary, AB). Our Ukrainian dancers are inspired and will showcase their pride, passion, and love for Ukraine, and for our Ukrainian heritage and they will stand united in dance with our friends from the Polish Canadian community who have acted so selflessly in support of the Ukrainian people.

Once again BRAVO! will take place in the core of our vibrant city at the iconic University Theatre - at the University of Calgary. Although it's a bit hidden by the newer buildings surrounding it, The University Theatre still stands as an example of the best architecture of its time. Tickets for the BRAVO! As our dancers put on their boots for this benefit performance, they will do so knowing that they are dancing for their homeland, forefathers and the current heroes of Ukraine.
