The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Janus Case yesterday. If you think this was a simple, isolated case of a person arguing for his constitutional rights, think again. As the NY Times lays out (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/25/business/economy/labor-court-conservatives.html) this is part of a highly coordinated strategy to destroy unions and the rights of working people to act collectively to negotiate better terms and conditions of employment for themselves. Our union is governed through a democratic process. You elect us. You work along side us. You let us know how we are doing. That's the way it should be. I have frequently told the parable of the bundle of sticks:
An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered them to bring in a bundle of sticks, and said to his eldest son: “Break it.”The son strained and strained, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none succeeded.“Untie the bundle,” said the father, “and each of you take a stick.” When they had done so, he told them: “Now, break,” and each stick was easily broken.
This case is simply about using the court to untie the bundle. Nothing more, nothing less. The answer is simple, don't let the bundle be untied.
