1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Teacher: The course is no longer taught by Prof. Enzo Baccarelli. However, he performs the pending examinations
Degree: Bachelor in Management Engineering (BGER2)
Credits: 9 CFU
Evaluation method: Examination
Office hours: Thursday, h: 12:00-14:00, room no. 201, DIET Department, Via Eudossiana no. 18
2. GOALS OF THE COURSE
The goal is to describe and analyse the basic protocol stacks, functionalities and offered services of the currently emerging wired/wireless communication networks and systems. Packet-switched data networks and Internet are mainly considered as case of study.
3. EXPECTED RESULTS
It is expected that the attending students will acquire the basic notions requested to understand the performance behaviour of the emerging Internet-oriented packet networks.
4. MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE
General architectures and reference models of packet-switched data networks
Functionalities and services of the Physical Layer: signal analysis, channel models, data modulation, source/channel coding
Functionalities and services of the Data-Link and MAC Layers: Multiplexing, ARQ protocols, LAN architectures and LAN interconnections
Functionalities and services of the Network Layer: routing algorithms, routing protocols and related perfomance
Forwarding and routing in IP and ATM networks
Functionalities and services of the Transport Layer: basic notions about reliable transport over unreliable networks
UDP and TCP protocols
