2. GOALS OF THE COURSE

The goal of this course is to describe and analyse the basic architectures, protocol stacks, functionalities, and offered services of the currently emerging wired Cloud-supported broadband communication networks for the support of Big Data services. Packet-switched data networks and Internet are mainly considered as case study.

3. EXPECTED RESULTS

It is expected that the attending students will acquire the basic notions, which are requested in order to understand the performance behaviour of the emerging Internet-supported networked computing architectures for the support of multimedia communication, Cloud computing, and Big Data applications.

4. MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE

  • General architectures and reference models of broadband packet-switched data networks

  • Functionalities and services of Physical Layer of xDSL and APON/BPON optical systems

  • Functionalities and services of Data-Link and MAC Layers of xDSL and APON/BPON optical systems

  • Multipexing and QoS in broadband networks: Difserv-vs.-Intserv models and QoS routing

  • Architectures, functionalities and services of Network Layer of broadband Cloud centers

  • Network architectures for the broadband access to Cloud-supported Big Data services

  • Traffic engineering and MPLS over broadband connections

  • MPLS-based L3VPN and VPLS: VoIP and IPTV service architectures

5. RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS
