Your University email is the official form of communication for all University, department, and program communications. It is essential that you check this account regularly starting now and throughout your program.
Activate your account:
Go to myu.umn.edu and follow the prompts under "Need an Account?" to initiate your student account.
You will need your Social Security Number (SSN), your student ID number, and your birth date.
If you do not have an SSN, leave that field blank.
Your student ID number is a 7-digit number (no letters) provided to you in your official admission letter. If you can not find it, contact Program Coordinator.
Activate your University email:
Go to myaccount.umn.edu.
Login using your internet id (also called x.500) and the password you created when activating account.
Click on Google Account Options.
Check three different boxes that you agree, then submit.
To check your email, go to mail.umn.edu and login.
Read emails that are there.
To confirm, send an email from your UMN email account to Program Coordinator.
Check this account regularly starting now and throughout your program.
If you have a personal Gmail account, you will probably need to use different browsers to have both that account and your new University of Minnesota email open at the same time.
Install VPN:
If you encounter technical difficulties accessing Google now or in the future, as long as you have successfully activated your UMN account, you can go here to download and install VPN provided by the University. VPN service allows students and faculty to connect to the University's network (which has access to Google) while not on campus. Internet ID and password are needed to download and connect. There are options for Windows, Linux, Mac, iphone, and Android.
Send official transcripts
The Office of Graduate Admissions places a hold on your record until they receive your official transcripts. "Holds" mean that you can not register. When you applied, you submitted unofficial transcripts. Official transcripts must now be sent directly from your former institutions to:
