*Sad but true: this was based on the seminar paper I wrote for Tamara Horowtiz's graduate course in Feminist Philosophy in the Fall of 1992. I started shopping it around to "mainstream" journals in 1996. This was not an efficient or gratifying process. I eventually gave up on the piece --- until Alison, who had seen me present a version of it at the University of Western Ontario in 1994, asked if it might be available for the special issue of Hypatia.
