Research interests: Developing clinical decision support algorithms for rare diseases in order to help clinicians identify patients who should be seen by specialists when presenting with complex patterns of overlapping disorders and/or symptoms.
Current Projects: My current research projects are (1) utilizing natural language processing algorithms to find and extract complete smoking behaviors (pack years, status, quit history) from electronic medical records in order to prove the feasibility of having a smoker's registry within the EHR system, with a side focus on identifying patients eligible for lung cancer screening to reduce lung cancer mortality; (2) identifying and functionally characterizing (via functional annotation databases, eQTL, and tQTL analysis) haplotypes in telomere structure and maintenance gene regions associated with lung cancer risk; and (3) identifying and characterizing the relationship between telomeres, lung cancer, and condensin II through computational and bench approaches.
