Reading Strategies, The Big idea and the Main idea! Picking a book at your reading level. Also, learning about making good inferences and asking better questions to assist in deepening our understanding.
Introducing the Daily 5 Structure.
Reading between the lines which is called inferring, helping us understand what we read at a deeper level and try to generate a personal point of view and personal opinion with evidence to back up own thoughts. This promotes thinking skills.
Reading strategies like reading for context, and re-read to understand a difficult word. Cover and review many reading strategies to ensure understanding of what is being read.
Always learning the use of root words, prefix and suffixes assist us in making connections to word meaning. As a result, learn how word origins help us better understand complex words. Plus expanding our vocabulary in all subject areas.

Learning about a plot line and parts of a narrative to assist in communicating about stories. (Introduction, setting, main characters, sub-characters, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion and theme conflicts)

Writing a good paragraph and what goes into a good answer. This includes a topic sentence, evidence, and a wrap up statement. With a connection that relates to the big idea or purpose of the paragraph.
Using the RASW structure to write a clear, concise response to a question.
Understanding the expectations of the writing program, learning to peer edit and self reflect on daily work.
Learn to navigate the Ugcloud effectively.
Learn to use the Read & Write App on the Ugcloud.
Persuasive writing in science and social studies that will assist in our class debates, Ugcloud slide shows.

Powtoon presentation in Science to create a commercial or Public Service Announcement for NASA and the importance of research and advancement in technology to enhance our daily lives. (Use knowledge of Ehtos, Pathos, Logos)
Interview and report writing involving Famous Canadian biographies.
Hope to present as a Wax Museum and students visit asking pre-scripted interview questions generated by grade 6 students. Responses come from the report.
NEXT Term: Newspaper article writing, about a time in Canadian history that makes us understand who we were in the past and how we have changed. Share as news report or interview as a news reporter or news anchor.
