Biography
Professor Anvari received his B.A. degree in Biophysics from University of California, Berkeley, and the Ph.D. degree in Bioengineering from Texas A&M University in 1993. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic, University of California, Irvine (UCI), and later a Research Assistant Professor of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College. He joined the Bioengineering Department at Rice University in 1998 as an Assistant Professor, and became an Associate Professor in 2003. In 2006, Dr. Anvari joined the newly established Department of Bioengineering at University of California, Riverside (UCR) as a Professor.
Dr. Anvari’s scientific interests are in the development and application of optical technologies for imaging and therapeutic purposes. While at UCI, He contributed to the development of the cryogenic spray cooling (CSC) technology for use in conjunction with laser treatment of cutaneous abnormalities such as port wine stains (PWSs). Dr. Anvari is a co-inventor on some of the patents related to CSC technology, which have been licensed and commercialized by Candela Corporation, a leading manufacturer of lasers utilized in dermatology for treatment of various cutaneous disorders including PWSs. In addition to PWS laser therapy, Dr. Anvari’s other research areas involve the use of nano-constructs as exogenous materials for near infrared optical imaging and phototherapy, and utilization of optical trapping methods to investigate the electromechanical properties of cell membranes.
Dr. Anvari’s research activities have been supported by various sources including The Whitaker Foundation, NSF, and NIH, totaling near $4.25 millions. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Anvari was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) as a Fellow for pioneering research and development of laser-based technologies that are widely used for clinical treatment of selected dermatological procedures in 2008, and elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for distinguished contributions to the field of biophotonics, particularly for development of technologies aimed at photoremediation of tissue malformations and cellular biophysical analysis in 2010. Dr. Anvari is an Associate Editor of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, and an Editorial Board Member of Journal of Biomedical Optics.
