Need For Quality Book Donations
Many communities, both in the U.S. and worldwide, are in need of books on the topics of quality management, technology, management and related areas. A large number of college students, managers, and professionals in developing countries don't have a clear idea of quality management practices and how quality concepts and principles can benefit their organization and its performance. Good quality and topic appropriate donations, which meet the needs of local communities, are of enormous value and provide vital support for education and training. The donations are not limited to only books but also journals, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, certification exams, and other instructional media.
Project Goals
To distribute donated books and media to people worldwide who desperately need yet cannot afford them. The project focuses on the topics in quality management, technology, and business disciplines.
Background
The project was established in November, 2010 and the first donation was from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) headquarters on March 17, 2011. We received 166 brand new books related to Performance Excellence, ISO 9000, Quality Management, Baldridge Awards, and others. The Kansas City chapter (1301) is the local section sponsor and help support the project by financing the shipping of the books to the University of Central Missouri campus. At the beginning we did not have a proper space for storing the books.
Our past Student Chair, Sneha Chitturi, worked hard with others to raise funds and to find the temporary storage. A special thank you to Dr. Mary McCord, of the Start-up center, who allowed us to store the books temporarily until a permanent location could be found.
With the assistance from the School of Technology, we were able to find a permanent home for the project in the T.R. Gaines Bldg. We just recently received an additional 180 new books from a retired UCM professor. Our plan is to maintain a library of about 1,000 books and be able to donate 200-300 books each year to three to five universities or regional areas in need.
First Donation Goes to Ghana
December 2012, the project donated 30 books to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. Joseph Owusu, an ASQ-UCM student member and resident of Ghana, assisted in the delivery of the books.
February, 2, 2012 - The officers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Library (Kumasi, Ghana) receive the 30 books donated from the ASQ-UCM Student Chapter.
Spring 2012 - The ASQ- UCM Student Chapter Book Project in their new permanent location.
