Social Studies at School
We have been working on rules and procedures as well as community building in our classroom. We will continue these skills and practices all year.
Social Studies by month.
Sept.- Going to school: (unit 1) Need for rules, working as a team, basic map skills
Oct.- Good Citizens: (unit 2) The story of our country's government. Children will explore rules and laws, voting, our local, state and national leaders, and American symbols. In addition, children will discover that they have both rights and responsibilities as citizens and ways they can be good citizens.
Nov.- Looking Back (unit 5) Focus on history. Children will explore the idea that people and places change over time. They will trace a family history, a community history, and examine our country's history. From the Native Americans and Columbus's voyage to the Pilgrims as early settlers. In addition children will explore the ways we celebrate historical events, the lives of historical figures, and ways technology has changed our lives.
Dec.- All About People (unit 4) Children will explore the roles of people in different groups as well as people's basic needs and the ways families meet those needs. In addition, children will develop an understanding of culture- what it is, ways people express their culture, ways they celebrate their culture, and similarities and differences in culture. Children will recognize that Americans have diverse backgrounds but they share customs from this country as well as others.
Jan.- The Jobs People Do (unit 6) Children will explore the concept of goods and services, the jobs that contribute to the production of goods and services, and they will trace the sequence in a manufacturing process. Children also will explore ways people work to meet needs and wants as well as ways technology has changed the ways people work. In addition, children will explore the concepts of buyers and sellers, saving, budgeting, and trade with other nations.
Feb.- The Land Around Us (unit 3) Children will explore the concept of neighborhood and the people who live in a community, as well as physical characteristics of Earth, such as land forms and bodies of water. They will explore how to use maps and globes to find places on Earth. In addition, children will explore some of Earth's resources, how people depend on them, and how we can help save them.
