We have fun while learning science with cool labs!
Units are in the sequence that they are taught.
Ready, Set, Science!
(September)
In this unit we are preparing for science. We learned about observation skills, the scientific method, and scientific tools. Observation skills lab- we read about our senses and how to use them to observe. We then did a lab where we closed our eyes and used our other senses to observe different types of fruit. We the made predictions about what we would see when we opened our eyes and then checked our predictions.
Students practiced prediction and check skills with this cotton ball and cup lab.
Students practiced using science tools and the scientific method with this pan balance lab.
Students completed a science journal during our lessons and labs to show their understanding of each skill.
Unit C (Physical Science)
This unit's focus is on matter, energy, and motion. Students begin to learn about abstractions such as evaporation, water vapor, gravity, and electricity and continue their study of motion and energy.
Chapter 5 (changes in matter)
(October)
Children will explore that everything is made of matter. Matter has observable properties, and usually exists in one of three forms- solid, liquid, or gas. Matter can be changed from one form to another.
Chapter 6 (Motion)
(November)
Children will explore that objects move in different ways. Pushes and pulls can cause objects to change speed, direction,or position. Gravity and magnets can also affect motion.
Chapter 7 (energy)
(December)
Children will explore that energy interacts with matter to make things work. Most energy on Earth comes from the sun. Conserving energy helps make sure everyone will have enough in the future.
Unit B (Life Science)
This unit's focus is on the needs and life cycles of certain plants and animals. Environmental conditions are considered in examining pant and animal adaptations.
Chapter 2 (living and nonliving)
(January)
Children will explore that things can be classified as living or nonliving. Animals and plants can be grouped based on physical characteristics. They have similar basic needs and develop through predictable life cycles.
Chapter 3 (How Living Things Get What They Need)
(February)
Children will explore that living things have adaptations that enable them to live in certain environments. The living things within an environment are interdependent.
Chapter 4 (Seasons)
(March)
Children will explore that the four seasons form a pattern. Weather and conditions change seasonally. Plants and animals react to seasonal change in predictable ways. (migrate, hibernate)
Unit A (Earth and Space)
This unit's focus is on identifying natural resources, explaining that many resources are limited, and that the Earth's surface undergoes changes over time.
Chapter 1 (Natural Resources)
(April)
Children will explore that people use and must protect the Earth's natural resources. Some of these resources are air, water, rock, soil, plants, and animals. Earth's surface is changed by people, animals, wind, and moving water.
