Scoring Guide

4 points= Student's response is significantly more than competent. Besides being almost free of errors, the response delivers information that is of high quality and interest value. Student's points are logical, well developed, and centered around a main idea that is established early in the response. Student's point of view is clearly stated and reinforced throughout the response.

3 points= Student's response is generally competent, has few errors, reasonably well organized and developed. The actual information given, however, is somewhat difficult to understand. The response does not completely convince the reader of the viewpoint of the student.

2 points= Student's statements are rough and difficult to understand. Statements are general rather than focused on a main point. Response is neither clear or convincing. Sentences are awkward and contain errors. Response seems to be written in haste without much thought given to the actual response.

1 point= Student's response is unclear and confusing. Sentences are mixed up, contain many errors, and do not explain why student feels a certain way about the subject. Response is hard to follow and difficult to read or understand. The response falls far short of what is accepted as an adequate explanation of how a student feels about a certain topic.

Due Friday, September 2nd.

You will be writing this week a Narrative story. In a Narrative writing the story (fiction or non-fiction)is told and the order in which it is told. Sometimes, there is a narrator, a character or series of characters, who tell the story. Sometimes, as with most non-fiction, the author himself/herself in the narrator (1st Person point of view).

    • Effective narrative essays allow readers to visualize everything that's happening, in their minds. One way to make sure that this occurs is to use concrete, rather than abstract, details. For example: Abstract: It was a nice day. Concrete: The sun was shining and a slight breeze blew across my face.

5.W.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Suppose you had the opportunity to travel anywhere you wanted. Write to explain where you would go and why.
