November 7th 2018 - Students were given the opportunity to work on their Saint assignments. Saints assignment due: November 9th 2018.
October 23rd 2018 - Discussed the meaning of Sainthood in the Church. Began a discussion on how one becomes a Saint and the qualities that they have. Watched a short clip on Venerable Fulton Sheen. Students were given the opportunity to catch up on journal entry reflections and assignments.
October 9th 2018 - Began a close reading on the teachings of Jesus. Will focus on the Beatitudes for the next two classes.
Assignment Due: September 26th 2018. In class today we finished the exercise by asking students to talk about themselves with their partner. Then we began a discussion on reason and revelation with respect to God.
Assignment: Beauty: Track down a naturally occurring phenomena and write about it. Take a picture, What is it you chose? Why you feel it is beautiful?
Finished reading the article. Discussed the quote "The only incomprehensible element of reality is that it is incomprehensible." Gave out assignment. Students are asked to bring in their cell phones for the next class. The assignment is one page double spaced, a picture of a beautiful object in nature. Then in typed format, what is it? Why do you find it beautiful? Is there anything neat, interesting, complex about the object you chose.
September 17th 2018 - Continued discussion on the article. Discussed William Paley's argument from Design. Discussed an objection to this argument namely found in evolution. Finally, students asked to journal: What is the argument for God's existence from design. Do they agree/disagree with the argument? Why/why not? Unfinished journals are due at the beginning of next class.
September 12th 2018 - Continued with the article relating to science, beauty, teenagers, and God. Discussed the concept of materialism and the challenges that this worldview naturally has. Discussed how this worldview often leads to the exclusion of ideas of God. Discussed the conflict that exists between faith and reason. We discussed ideas of trust also implicit in science that help individuals todo the scientific method.
September 7th 2018 - Began a discussion on the article "Science, Beauty, Teenagers, and the God Question". We discussed as a class one reason to believe in God, and one reason not to believe in God. our conversation in class centered around the notion of ideology. Students will be asked in the next class to reflect on this notion.
