Exploring the pūrākau of Whanuangatanga

Stories (pūrākau) are powerful. They inspire and affirm us.

Māori ancestors left us rich pūrākau to help us understand our origins." Māori creation pūrākau speak about our heartfelt connections with others and how we naturally respond with deep grief when we lose someone we love.

He waka eke noa - Are we all working hard  at paddling in unison and  supporting others on their learning  journey?

Our whanaungatanga sun has our hoe at the top, to remind us to paddle in the same direction. On each of the sun's cheek we have the rope that binds us together as class whānau and school whānau. On the cheeks we also hei matau, the hook , pulling us together. Inside the hook we have the four koru, each representing the teams of the school -  Nīkau, Rāta, Kōwhai and Totara. This represents how we all work together in the school to achieve whanaungatanga.

Down the centre of the sun we have our Mā te mahi ka ora symbol, to remind us that we have to work hard at whanaungatanga to be successful. We have to work especially hard taking responsibility for everyone in our class whānau and school whānau , helping them to feel that they are safe and belong, just like we do with our whānau at home.
