It Ought to Be a Law

The purpose of Congress is to represent us, the citizens, in our federal government. Congress creates legislation to protect us and our rights in our personal and professional lives based on what we have asked for. Think of all the ways that Congress might influence you in your professional life or in your career. How might you create support for a bill that would benefit your career pathway?

As a group develop a plan to create support for a bill that will benefit your career pathway. Your plan must include:

  • What is your idea? Why is it important/significant for your career pathway?

  • How you will gain the attention of Congress to support the bill?

  • Who will introduce your bill and how does this person meet the requirements for serving in Congress?

  • Which power of Congress allows them to pass this kind of bill (what makes it Constitutional)?

  • Who else will support your bill outside of Congress?

  • Which members of Congress will most likely support your bill? Why?

  • Who could you garner support from in order to gain more influence in Congress?

  • How will the bill make its way through Congress to become a law?

Your group will develop a visual presentation for your plan so that members of your career can learn about the bill and decide whether or not they would want their representatives to support it. Your entire group will present the plan to the class in a three minute presentation. The class will vote on each bill and decide whether it should be passed or not.
