8th Grade Art

Art II is a fast-paced art class that will encourage students to tap into their passions and creativity to create original and stimulating art projects. Expression and creative problem-solving will be stressed in this course. Students will create three projects using various media and techniques. Color theory and facial proportion will be covered in a painting assignment. Sculpture and figure proportion will also be studied and implemented, and mixed media will be used to create an "issue piece" that will include some research and writing. Art II will push students to convey a message or mood through their art, students will have creative freedom and their artwork will be a vehicle for self-expression.

Project #1: Acrylic Self-Portrait

Students will create a self-portrait while working from a photograph that has been edited and simplified in Photoshop. Students will use proper measuring to grid both the photograph and the canvas and transfer the photo to a canvas board. Students will choose a competent color scheme which we will discuss in class.

They then mix varying tints and shades of the color/colors to show value and detail in their self-portrait. Color, value, and painting techniques will be the main focus of this project.

Project #2: Wire Figures

Students will learn accurate figure proportion and they will practice drawing various poses while implementing these rules.

Students will come up with a unique pose their pose can show action, motion, or a stationary figure. They will create a sketch for their pose using the rules of proportion that we talk about in class. Then students will build a wire armature and build the form or their figure using colorful re-purposed telephone wire.

Students will focus on showing form, using accurate figure proportion, and wrapping wire neatly and carefully.

Project #3: Social Commentary Mixed Media
