In the study of mythology, the hero's journey is a narrative form that depicts a hero who is suddenly drawn into an adventure, and in a struggle wins a victory, coming home changed.
Joseph Campbell described it as a "monomyth," in The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), and many subsequent storytellers--including Steven Spielberg and George Lucas (in the original Star Wars trilogy) adapted his ideas wholesale. See below for a slide presentation about the monomyth and the role of riddles in the transmission of wisdom in western culture.
The stages of the hero's journey vary, but often include...1. The Call to Adventure.2. Refusal of the Call.3. Meeting with a Mentor.4. Crossing the Threshold to a different world. 5. Tests and battles.6. Forming alliances.
7. Going into a cave or recess.
8. An Ordeal.
9. Meeting a goddess and healing.
10. Resurrection.
11. Return home.
