James Tiptree, Jr. (a.k.a. Alice Sheldon), was a major figure in the development of SciFi, especially with feminist themes. "The Girl Who Was Plugged In" (1974) has been reprinted many times, and remains a remarkably prescient work exploring concepts of artificial life, avatars, body-image, gender roles, and capitalism.
