August 28, 2023
Dear Parents,
Believe it or not, we are already looking ahead to our 2023 Reading Fair at Mendenhall Elementary.
This year, the categories for grades K, 1, & 2 have changed from having a choice of Individual Fiction or Family fiction projects to ONLY FAMILY.
Kindergarten will be Division A
Grades 1 and 2 will be Division B
Focus is being placed on copyrighted material being given credit to the creator or source.
Focus on plagiarism means disqualification of project.
Grades 3, 4, & 5 may choose either fiction or non-fiction.
Grade 3 Individual Fiction is Division C
Grades 4 & 5 Individual Fiction is Division D
Grades 3, 4, & 5 Individual NF is Division G
Grades 3, 4 & 5 Group Fiction is Division J
Projects will be due on Thursday Oct. 12th classroom judging on Friday, Oct. 13th, and school judging on Monday, Oct. 16th. Winners will be announced that day. All 1st place winners in each division will move on to the district reading fair.
Projects are OPTIONAL in all grades, however many of our reading standards are involved in completing a project board. All detailed informational packets concerning the reading fair are linked up on the library website https://sites.google.com/a/simpson.k12.ms.us/mendenhall-elementary-library/home/reading-fair, as well as the school website. You may download the information and print it out. The library link off the school website also has a variety of tips on the reading fair.
A Q & A workshop for all Mendenhall students K-12 will be held in our elementary library on Tuesday, Sept. 12th from 3:30-4:30 p.m. If you cannot attend, and do not have internet service to download the informational packet from online, please check the box below, and the school will assist you in getting you more information.
A checklist of what is required on each project is attached with this note so you can see how the fictional and nonfictional boards will be judged, and how they require different items (for 3rd -5th) with the nonfiction projects. Students completing a project should have the checklist sheet completed, signed by the student and parent, and then posted on the back of the project.
Let me know if you have any questions.
