Now stripped, it was time to take stock of the things that are broken and / or need replacement in this gearbox. Sadly, there's an enormous amount of stuff to replace. Even with my limited knowledge -- this is well beyond anything I've ever attempted before, mechanically speaking -- I can see that there are a shitload of parts that will need to be replaced if this gearbox ever hopes to turn again.
I would wager that there are three contributing factors. First, I suspect the vehicle wasn't really cared for over its life; a lot of the seals were missing or failed. This probably led to the ingress of mud into the gearbox. Second, it's probably a very high-mileage vehicle. Stuff wears. And finally, I don't know when the last time parts were replaced inside. Many of them could be original and therefore past their expected service lives.
Let's look at what's on the list:
Hmm.
I had left the bellhousing intact while stripping the gearbox. It was now time to take a look at that.
I don't *think* this stuff is corrosion, but it behaves kind of like it. It's hard to shift without a brass brush (at least) and some degreaser.
The Black Death (or whatever it is) may not be corrosion, but the red stuff certainly is. Probably pretty fresh, judging by the colour, likely following from some of my cleanup efforts.
Into the vise goes the input shaft so the nut can be drifted off.
And now we have the complete, disassembled input shaft assembly. Lots of "black death" in there.
I spent some time crunching numbers on replacement parts. Everything I needed appeared to be available from Craddock's in the UK. Which is, to be honest, really great: I know Land Rovers need a lot of work, but that just means that parts are pretty available, even for 60+ year old trucks! It's awesome to be able to get, in some cases, original parts.
The problem is budget. I ran the numbers and the total shopping cart (including some transfer case parts, more to follow on that) came to £1,451.84. At current exchange rates, that's $2374 Canadian doll-hairs.
... I don't think I can afford that. I will have to search for other options.
