First, let's start with a state of the union on the gearbox and transfer case.
What we know:
This is a gearbox out of a Series 2 Land Rover;
It's a high-mileage unit. How high we don't know;
Some parts are in obvious need of replacement, among them the levers / linkages and oil seals. It's super dirty; and
Its condition is unknown. Unclear if / when it's been rebuilt or who's been in there before and for what.
<- Serial number suggests it's a pre-'suffix' box, so it will share some components with Series 1's.
It's really, really dirty. This is *after* pressure washing the 'box. The dirt and sand on there is caked in EP90 which has been leaking from both output seals, probably some of the gaskets between the components, and out the selector shaft seals. It's a mess.
Just visible also above and to the right is a little silicone so someone had it apart before.
There's oil in the bellhousing too. Unclear where it's from, but it's manky.
There is a carriage bolt with a big washer on the outside and some kind of rubber pad (I think for an emergency / footbrake?) somewhat covering one of the inspection holes in the bellhousing. It worked, I guess? Maybe?
The clutch linkage looks pretty worn too with lots of play in it.
Just getting into some of the components it's becoming obvious that there will be a lot of work to do to replace parts that are bent, worn, or unserviceable.
The 4WD selector lever is a long way from straight and the bushes have a ton of wear in 'em. The clevis pin is worn through by about 20% which is just visible in the pic, above.
The whole thing is really gonna be quite the job. Hrm.
