Network Showcase Presentations
The workshop was run by David Alker (a former pharma recruiter) and focused on real life scenarios (including online style interviews) that the early stage researchers (ESRs) are likely to encounter when entering the job market.
Prior to the workshop, the ESRs sent a copy of their CV (as if applying for an actual job) to Dave as well as a short statement including their technical specialism; careers aspirations & goals; or general advice & questions they had about applying for jobs!
The workshop began with a group Introductory Session outlining general aspects to consider when applying for jobs. This session was followed by personal 45 minute slot with Dave where the ESRs had the opportunity to present their research and then go through a mock-style interview. Each ESR was asked to prepare a 10-minute (power-point or suitable alternative) presentation which was followed by 5 minutes of questions on their presentation from Dave. The remainder of the time was taken with general questions about their experience and abilities. The ESRs were also asked to have some blank paper and a dark marker pen as you will be asked to write out certain structures / answers etc. on paper and hold it up to the screen (as is standard practice in online industry interviews).
